The Pinnacle of Covered Girl Couture: Happening Now!

The shift in the past several years is undeniable. Some say it's the lure of handsome payback from the infamously affluent Middle Eastern markets. Others say there was simply no other direction left for fashion to go. Whatever the reason, the change in direction is officially here to stay... for now.

Big wigs like Valentino shifted to demure couture gowns due to all that disposable income up for grabs in conservative global markets (the purchase of the luxury label by Qatari royalty also probably had something to do with it), and several others have made similar changes to their designs. But you know the modesty trend has officially arrived when Karl Lagerfeld, arguably the most influential individual in the fashion world, chose to host his highly anticipated Chanel cruise show in the unexpected locale of Dubai earlier in the month. The event extracted the who's who of fashion out to the Middle East, an elaborate smorsgaboard ranging from A-list Hollywood actresses to Saudi princesses, as well as a healthy range on the modesty scale of locals donning everything from abayas to minis under one roof with zero judgement.  Lagerfeld delivered a collection of covered yet flattering cuts likened to the traditional shalwar kameez of the subcontinent, with his long, flowy tunics and slim pants adorned with much more pomp, print, and bling than the usual classic Chanel designs.

Who would've guessed this is Chanel?

And as if that weren't enough, Kim Kardashian, reality tv's bombshell notorious for her risque fashion choices as much as for her volatile love life, shocked the world last weekend with her elegant, and for the most part, covered Givenchy gown for her third set of nuptials in Versailles. The dress featured a sky-scraping neckline up to her neck (no decollatege or even a more subtly alluring collarbone in sight!), full sleeves to the wrists, and a floor-length hemline with an unadorned, simple veil. The verdict? Even average Joes on Instagram contended that Kim looked equal parts, if not much, much more beautiful than in her past revealing apparatus.

Some of the very few public images of their big day. Even Kimye's photo coverage was modest!

Love her or hate her, her heavy influence in the mainstream fashion and beauty sphere is undeniable

There have been small victories along the journey, paving the way for these big wins for team modesty. Last year, Christian fashion week made history by marketing its controversial wish shrewdly as a dare: "We are looking for designers who want to challenge themselves to create art without the crutch of sexuality. We fully understand that sex sells. But for the everyday woman, sexuality is not the dominant quality she wants to exhibit. She is a force to be reckoned with beyond the visuals of her anatomy. She is fierce and demands attention with her strength, intelligence, and grace. Now, THAT is sexy."

So it's official. Us full-time restrained folks can relax a little bit in our hoarding of maxi's and long tees as if they will disappear from stores tomorrow. Doesn't look like they will be slipping from our grasp anytime soon now that the rest of the world is in our little thing. Hopefully it's a significant matter of time before hemlines start rising and necklines start plunging all across the board once again. Atleast we'll have our closets brimming with full-sleeved goddess dresses and breezily chic palazzo pants to fall back on when this discreet stage in the fashion cycle comes to its inevitable end.

Nope, not Junaid Jamshed! Those double C's are somewhere on there

Oh Menswear, How I Love Thee. Let Us Count the Ways...

When I was a tween, I favored preppy button-ups, baggy rolled up jeans, vests, and slouchy V-necks. When my own closet fell short, I unapologetically dove into my brother's (much to his dismay) collection of henleys, tees, and sweatshirts...and not just because they were modest.  Back then, I wasn't actually sure why I adored them so much. I remember very fondly wearing a mechanic shirt in a swampwater-green hue, complete with arm patches emblazened with random petroleum blurbage. I wore it until I bore holes in the elbows in college...and this was before I patched it. There was just something effortlessly cool about these unconstricted, non-girly silhouettes I was so drawn to.

It wasn't until recently, as a grown adult that I realized WHY I was so smitten. There is something remarkably untrying, something understatedly confident about a gal in dude's clothing. It's like subconsciously flipping the bird to all those ridiculous expectations society has of women - to be ultra feminine, to wear confining shapes, makeup, hair did, everything did, much like Coco Chanel with the invention of her relaxed suit in an era of corsets and ultra-femme looks.  It's not really caring about being ladylike. I'm not talking about being androgynously masculine, the goal is never to try to LOOK like a guy...rather, it's to bring in masculine elements which, surprisingly enough,  highlight femininity.  As much as I enjoy dressing up and looking "pretty" on occasion, menswear allows me to "hide" in my outfit in a subtle and edgier way, without having to wear a potato sack or a burqa to protest the societal norms of curling my hair, donning a skirt, or...wearing pink.

Real life menswear - strong and effortless

For all these reasons, the Kurt Cobain era of "Smells Like Teen Spirit" chic holds a sweet, nostalgic spot in my heart. My own clean, not-so-grungy take on grunge was an everyday version of menswear that was realistic for me...because unfortunately, I was never invited to as many black tie galas, where I could sport my pinstripe tuxedos and slicked back hair, as I would have liked. Sad face.

Docs. Nuff said.

Already an avid menswear and grunge fan when it flourished in the 90's, the trend allowed me to wear my flannels, non-tight jeans, and Doc Martens with reckless abandon. With the reemergence of tartan, combat boots, and "picnic tablecloth" print these days, I'm particularly excited...and I just can't hide it.

If you've ever thought about diving into any form of menswear but weren't sure how, here is a guideline to keep in mind - be sure makeup and hair can hang by keeping them ladylike yet strong (red lips, winged liner, sleek but soft hair), and add feminine accessories as a foil to the hard apparel (think dainty necklaces, chains, charm bracelets, pointy pumps).

The best of femme-edge: Boho Grunge

Any wonder why these are my favorite shoes of the moment?

Here's to being older, more confident, and more able to embrace the things we love...and knowing exactly why :)

Water Water, Everywhere

"Nothing is more modern than the oldest shapes of the history of the world – not of humans. The shapes of the sea are very modern and very inspiring." - Karl Lagerfeld

Oceanic inspiration is no new concept in fashion. In fact, most reoccuring spring and summer looks can draw their roots straight from aquatic elements:  the coral surge as seen everywhere in floaty chiffon separates and your current favorite lipcolors. The punchy aqua-shimmer hue of your last manicure. The demure yet edgy fishtail braid for evening.  Iridescent pearl finishes in everything from makeup to jewelry. That adorable bejeweled clam clutch. Even subtle concepts such as scalloped details and edging can be traced back to water life shapes.

These notions have always had their place during warmer months, but perhaps the recent years' explosion can be attributed to powerhouse Karl Lagerfeld's dreamy underwater depiction in his Spring and Summer 2012 show featuring crisp outlines of sea creatures, coral, and seahorses with models emerging from a bubbled cave. Lagerfeld's attempt to break away from Chanel's traditional image of chains, tweed, and their interjoined CC trademark ("we don't need the logo anymore as everyone copies") served as a means to take these once juvenile "Little Mermaid" concepts into the grown-up mainstream limelight.

For those of us who dread the onslaught of heat and wonder how we will get thru yet another summer without resorting to skimpier clothing, the aquatic trend is a fun and punchy way to incorporate beach elements into one's repertoire...helping squelch the need for two-pieces and mini's to look and feel summer-savvy.

Each year this is a challenge. Aside from the usual myriad of ways we think to cope (thinner fabrics, flowier cuts) there always seems to miraculously appear a unique saving grace - a while back it was the tunic trend, and for the past few years it's been the monumental return of the slit-free, cling-free, flowy, airy, and hence dreamy maxi skirt and dress.

This summer, in addition to the mainstream long lengths and bright hues that help make us feel cool, calm, and seasonally appropriate, try adding a little water to your look.  From the treasure of aquatic prints to choose from and the shimmery allure of mermaid hues in apparel and makeup, there is certainly no shortage of ways to make this look uniquely your own.

Perfectly Clear

Follow Me on PinterestInstagram
Perhaps it's a fashion metaphor for us to be our true, transparent selves. Or maybe it's life imitating fairytale art in the form of Cinderella's glass slipper. The crystal clear element making its way across the season's hottest accessories can evoke to mind many other images as well - a futuristic, Jetson-induced tomorrow, or a tinted jelly sandal from our youth. Even the negative connotation of an exotic dancer's heel is banished with the emergence of these much more tasteful alternatives.

Love them or hate them, there is no denying the surge of clear shoes, bags, jewelry, hats, clutches, and countless other pieces that are very much in vogue right now. Whether or not you choose to sport them, the intrigue is inarguably high:  a box clutch that demurely reveals your most streamlined possessions, a shoe mysteriously propped on an invisible heel, or the baffling mirage of your car keys being suspended in hot pink lava.

Futuristic yet retro, lucite and acrylic evoke a mood of the 1960's mod era.  Already having established their place firmly in modern home decor, there is an unmistakable Hollywood glamour to these see-thru elements. So much that designers have even attempted transparent shirts and bottoms, (sometimes with cleverly tinted, strategically placed bits, and other times...not) but who are we kidding? Those looks are best left to the runway for most of us, who can shrewdly decipher a shrink-wrapped looking shirt from a real-life interpretation. Clear watches were mainstream in 2012, perhaps paving the way of acceptance for their classy sister-accessories in the form of shoes, belts, baubles, and bags. Translated into safe and practical new accessories, the element of fun and surprise is still there.  Maybe we don't need the clear, giant derby hat from the runway, but we can start small...

So go ahead, indulge. Take a bit of this glamorous, not-so-practical trend and cleverly insert the lucite element of choice into your life.  And if you choose not to, at least admire from afar all they represent....a little bit of fairytale, a little bit of nostalgia, a glimpse of tomorrow, and a bit of the confidence it takes to reveal a little tiny part of your whole, real self.
